{"id":1364,"date":"2023-12-14T17:09:44","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T17:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebratingcinema.com\/?p=1364"},"modified":"2026-03-18T22:47:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T22:47:14","slug":"reflections-on-oppression-revolution-in-the-battle-of-algiers-1966","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebratingcinema.com\/reflections-on-oppression-revolution-in-the-battle-of-algiers-1966\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on Oppression &#038; Revolution in the Battle of Algiers (1966)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Movies have always been a way to understand the world around us, and so, confronted with the brutal horrors of both Hamas\u2019s attacks on October 7th and Israel\u2019s disproportionate slaughtering of thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians, we question if cinema can try to make sense of such atrocities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For this episode of Celebrating Cinema, we focus on Gillo Pontecorvo\u2019s seminal classic The Battle of Algiers, a brutally candid expos\u00e9 of the French colonial mindset, which recounts a similar bloody struggle for the liberation of the Algerian people in the 1950s. Ultimately, this film both humanises and complicates the reality of violence between the oppressor and the oppressed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As we discuss public oppression, organised resistance, how violence begets violence, as well as the media\u2019s power in \u2018selling\u2019 a colonial occupation and the consequences for the civilian people caught in the middle of all this. But most importantly we focus on how a film like The Battle Of Algiers can offer hope for freedom in these tragic times.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex
